Air France has this week resumed direct flights to Tehran from Paris Charles de Gaulle after a seven-year hiatus.
The launch of the three-times weekly service comes as French companies increase their investments in the country. France is now Iran’s fourth largest trade partner after Germany, Switzerland and the UAE, according to US government figures.
This year, car marker Renault launched a joint venture with two Iranian firms to build 300,000 vehicles a year for the local market while oil and gas firm Total announced in February a deal to produce 4 million tons of liquefied natural gas in the country annually.
The new Air France service operates to Tehran’s busy Mehrabad airport. The city’s new Imam Khomeini International Airport, built at a cost of around £300 million over a period of 30 years, was opened officially last month but was shut down by the army because of security concerns after just one international flight had touched down.
British Airways resumed direct flights from Heathrow to Tehran in 1998 after a gap of 20 years but these were taken over by BA franchisee British Mediterranean in the winter of 2000 when the route proved unprofitable.
