On July 3, 1988, Iran Air Flight 655 , also known as IR655, was blown out of the sky by a U.S. Navy warship named USS Vincennes over the Strait of Hormuz in Iranian territorial waters.
The Aircraft was an Airbus A300B2 operated by Iran Air as IR655, was flying from Bandar Abbas, Iran, to Dubai, UAE, when it was destroyed. This tragedy resulted in the killing of all 290 innocent civilian from six nations including 66 children, ranking it the seventh among the deadliest airliner fatalities.
It was the highest death toll of any aviation accident in the Indian Ocean and the highest death toll of any accident involving an Airbus A300 anywhere in the world.
According to the documents submitted to the International Court of Justice by Iran, the aircraft was carrying 290 people: 274 passengers and a crew of 16. Of these 290, 254 were Iranian nationals, 13 were nationals of the United Arab Emirates, ten of India, six of Pakistan, six of Yugoslavia and one of Italy.
According to the US government, the crew mistakenly identified the Iranian Airbus A300 as an attacking F-14 Tomcat fighter. The Iranian government maintained that the Vincennes was too technically advanced to make such a huge mistake and knowingly shot down a civilian aircraft and it
The event generated a great deal of controversy and criticism of the US. Some analysts have blamed US military commanders and the captain of the Vincennes for reckless and aggressive behavior in a tense and dangerous environment.
President Ronald Reagan expressed regret for the tragedy, which the U.S. military claimed was an “accident”, yet the crew of the USS Vincennes warship was subsequently awarded combat-action ribbons, and its Commander was specially commended by the Navy with a medal for “heroic achievement”.
