TEHRAN – The European Commission (EC) has dropped Iran’s Mahan Airlines from its safety blacklist of airlines banned from Eropean Union (EU) skies.
Mahan Air is being removed “in view of the significant efforts and progress accomplished by this carrier, which were verified during an on site inspection in Iran,” the executive branch of the European Union said on Thursday.
Talking to MNA, Reza Ja’farzadeh, the spokesman of Iran’s Civil Aviation Organization (CAO), said that the EC lifted the ban on Mahan Air, imposed on September 11, 2007, after it completely overhauled the company’s technical and operational situation and its organizational structure.
Once Mahan Air receives the permit from CAO, the company is capable of having flights to 25 EU countries.
Mahan Air is a private airline based in Tehran, currently operating flights to 28 destinations in 12 countries. The airline runs 13% of all international flights from and to Iran.
Mahan Air was established in 1991 and began flights in 1992. It later joined the International Air Transport Association (IATA) in 2001.
